TikTok Ads MCP Beginner Guide: Connect and Run a First Read-Only Analysis
Prepare your account, choose an official MCP endpoint, complete OAuth, and use a copy-ready prompt for a first seven-day read-only TikTok Ads analysis.
This guide takes you from a TikTok for Business account to a first read-only report through TikTok's official MCP server. You do not need to write code, create a developer app, or manage an API key. Most people can finish in 10–15 minutes.
The official server includes both reporting and ad-management tools. The workflow below uses read operations only; it does not create, edit, pause, or delete ads.
What you will have when you finish
- Your MCP client can connect to TikTok Ads MCP.
- You have completed TikTok for Business OAuth in a browser.
- The AI can list the advertiser accounts you are allowed to access.
- The AI can report the last seven complete calendar days in the account's time zone and currency.
- You can verify that the answer came from account data instead of model assumptions.
Before you start
| Requirement | Minimum | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| MCP client | Installed and able to add a Streamable HTTP server | You can open its MCP settings |
| TikTok for Business account | Able to sign in | Sign in once in your default browser |
| Ad-account access | Permission to view the target account and reports | Open the account and a report in TikTok Ads Manager |
| Browser | Able to open OAuth and return to the client | Temporarily disable popup or sign-in blockers |
| Account context | Target account, time zone, and currency are known | Check the account settings in Ads Manager |
If you do not yet have an ad account, register for TikTok for Business and finish the basic Ads Manager account setup. For a team account, a Business Center administrator must also assign the ad account to your user.
Step 1: Verify your ad-account access
- Sign in to TikTok Ads Manager.
- Switch to the account you plan to analyze.
- Record its account name, advertiser ID, time zone, and currency.
- Open reporting and confirm that your user can see recent spend.
Checkpoint: You can see the target account in Ads Manager before connecting MCP. OAuth can authorize existing access; it does not grant access to a new ad account.
Step 2: Choose the official server endpoint
TikTok offers two tool-loading modes:
| Mode | Official endpoint | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Progressive Disclosure | https://business-api.tiktok.com/open_mcp/tt-ads-mcp-layer | Loads about 40 core tools first and discovers more on demand; the best default for beginners |
| Full Disclosure | https://business-api.tiktok.com/open_mcp/tt-ads-mcp-flat | Loads about 400 tools at connection time; use when the client can handle a large tool context |
Unless your client guide says otherwise, start with Progressive Disclosure. Both modes connect to the same TikTok Ads capabilities; they are not separate account systems.
Step 3: Add the server to your MCP client
Open the client's MCP settings, create a remote server, and enter:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | TikTok Ads |
| Type | Streamable HTTP |
| Server URL | https://business-api.tiktok.com/open_mcp/tt-ads-mcp-layer |
Save the entry and reload the client. For exact client-specific steps, use one of these guides:
Checkpoint: TikTok Ads appears in the MCP server list. A “needs authentication” status is expected at this point.
Step 4: Complete OAuth
- Select Authenticate or Connect beside the TikTok Ads server.
- In the browser, sign in as the TikTok for Business user who can access the target account.
- Review the permissions shown on the authorization screen.
- Approve access and wait for the browser to return to the client.
- Refresh the MCP status; restart the client once if it does not update.
Do not paste a TikTok password, cookie, token, or OAuth callback URL into chat. A normal OAuth flow completes between the browser and the client.
Checkpoint: The server is connected or enabled and no longer asks you to sign in.
Step 5: Verify that tools loaded
Open the client's MCP tool list. TikTok Ads should be present and expose at least some tools. A shorter list is normal with Progressive Disclosure because additional tools are discovered when needed.
If the server exists but shows zero tools, reload the client first. Then verify that the URL ends in tt-ads-mcp-layer and is not an Ads Manager web-page URL.
Step 6: List accessible advertiser accounts
Paste this prompt:
Use only read operations from TikTok Ads MCP. List the advertiser accounts available to the currently authorized user.
For each account, return:
- account name
- advertiser ID
- account status
- time zone
- currency
Mark any field the API does not return as "unavailable." Do not infer it.
Do not create, edit, pause, or delete any campaign, ad group, ad, audience, budget, bid, or targeting setting.
Successful result: The response includes an account you recognize, and its name, advertiser ID, time zone, and currency match Ads Manager. Copy the advertiser ID you will use next.
If the list is empty, fix the signed-in user or Business Center assignment instead of repeatedly changing the prompt.
Step 7: Run the first read-only analysis
Replace 1234567890123456789 with the advertiser ID you verified:
Use only read operations from TikTok Ads MCP to analyze advertiser ID 1234567890123456789.
Requirements:
1. First confirm the account name, advertiser ID, time zone, and currency.
2. Use the last seven complete calendar days ending yesterday in the account time zone. Exclude today.
3. Summarize by campaign: status, spend, impressions, clicks, CTR, CPC, conversions, CVR, CPA, conversion value, and ROAS.
4. Sort by spend descending and include an account-total row.
5. State the conversion event and attribution basis used.
6. Mark metrics the API does not return as "unavailable." Do not guess and do not treat missing values as zero.
7. End with no more than three anomalies for human review and show the data supporting each one.
Do not create, edit, pause, or delete any campaign, ad group, ad, audience, budget, bid, or targeting setting. Do not execute recommendations.
How to know it worked
A reviewable answer should contain:
- An explicit account name and advertiser ID.
- Exact start and end dates, with today excluded.
- Account time zone and currency.
- A clear report level and sort order.
- Conversion event, attribution basis, and filters.
- A clear distinction between zero and unavailable.
- Data supporting every conclusion.
If any item is missing, ask the AI to add the context before making a business decision.
Fast troubleshooting order
The server does not appear
Confirm that the server was saved and enabled, verify the complete endpoint, and reload the client. Do not enter the Ads Manager homepage.
The browser keeps returning to sign-in
Sign in to the correct TikTok for Business user in your default browser, allow popups and local callbacks, and start authentication again from the client.
The server is connected but the account list is empty
Confirm that the same user can see the target account in Ads Manager. Ask a Business Center administrator to check the user-to-account assignment for team accounts.
The account exists but the report is empty
Verify the advertiser ID, account time zone, and date range. Try the last three complete calendar days and ask the AI to show the filters it actually used.
The report differs from Ads Manager
Compare time zone, date boundaries, currency, attribution window, conversion event, and reporting level. Do not compare an Ads Manager view that includes today with a report of complete days ending yesterday.
See TikTok Ads MCP Troubleshooting for a complete diagnostic sequence.
Credential and execution safety
- Never paste passwords, cookies, access tokens, or OAuth callback URLs into a prompt.
- Do not expose full advertiser IDs, client names, or business data in public screenshots.
- Use read operations for the first workflow and explicitly prohibit writes in every prompt.
- Reject any request to call a create, update, pause, or delete tool in this tutorial.
- Put budget, bid, targeting, or status changes in a separate, human-approved workflow.
